Over the years there have been many great Cape Cod songs or at least references to Cape Cod in them. Here are a few of my favourites.
"Old Cape Cod"--by Patti Page
Out of all the songs about Cape Cod, this is probably the most famous of them all.
Lyrics:
If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air Quaint little villages here and there You're sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod
If you like the taste of a lobster stew Served by a window with an ocean view You're sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod
Winding roads that seem to beckon you Miles of green beneath a sky of blue Church bells chimin' on a Sunday morn Remind you of the town where you were born
If you spend an evening you'll want to stay Watching the moonlight on Cape Cod Bay You're sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod
If you spend an evening you'll want to stay Watching the moonlight on Cape Cod Bay You're sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod
A classic Cape Cod song that has stood the test of time.
"Cape Cod Girls"---by James Bouchard
Lyrics:
Cape Cod girls ain't got no combs haul away, haul away They comb their hair with codfish bones haul away, haul away
Chorus Heave 'er up, my bully, bully boys, haul away, haul away Heave 'er up, my bully, bully boys, And we're bound away for Australia
Cape Cod boys ain't got no sleds. haul away , haul away They slide down hills on codfish heads, haul away, haul away...CHORUS
Cape Cod doctors ain't got no pills, haul away, haul away They feed their patients codfish gills, haul away, haul away...CHORUS
Cape Cod cats ain't got no tails, haul away, haul away They all blew off in the northeast gales, haul away, haul away...CHORUS
"Fear and Loathing On Cape Cod"--by Piebald
Lyrics:
If I find my way back home, I'll say what am I doing here?? We have made our camp, but not settled. Nothing can touch us here. We took the van one night. The three of us, contraband, and our bikes.
The city was left behind. Our own vacation, our own weekend, our own fear and loathing except on Cape Cod.
At two in the morning when my body's not attached to my head. We got on our bikes and rode. My legs like Jello when we rode that night.
Hot livers and cold purse. The day was going everywhere in a hurry, Instead of nowhere fast. Take a pill. Do substances. Have a drink.
Recreational drug use to drive golf balls. It's the most comfortable and uncomfortable place. The discomfort is not in a bad way. No, not in a bad way. Don't make me go home.
My own chocolate heart. Look at your scales, your head is on all wrong. I've got monsters on my brain. A towel on his head after jumping off the pier, Rama said I looked like a Kennedy. And Ryan's taking pictures. And flattery doesn't make sense in our state. We had to make our own fear and loathing on Cape Cod.
"Escape (Pina Colada Song)"--by Rupert Holmes
Listen to the song and catch a video:
Lyrics:
I was tired of my lady We'd been together too long Like a worn-out recording Of a favorite song So while she lay there sleeping I read the paper in bed And in the personal columns There was this letter I read
"If you like Pina Coladas And getting caught in the rain If you're not into yoga If you have half a brain If you'd like making love at midnight In the dunes on the Cape Then I'm the love that you've looked for Write to me and escape."
I didn't think about my lady I know that sounds kind of mean But me and my old lady Have fallen into the same old dull routine So I wrote to the paper Took out a personal ad And though I'm nobody's poet I thought it wasn't half bad
"Yes I like Pina Coladas And getting caught in the rain I'm not much into health food I am into champagne I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon And cut through all this red-tape At a bar called O'Malley's Where we'll plan our escape."
So I waited with high hopes And she walked in the place I knew her smile in an instant I knew the curve of her face It was my own lovely lady And she said, "Oh it's you." Then we laughed for a moment And I said, "I never knew."
That you like Pina Coladas Getting caught in the rain And the feel of the ocean And the taste of champagne If you'd like making love at midnight In the dunes of the Cape You're the lady I've looked for Come with me and escape
Ah, that Cape Cod song brings back memories.
It is a bit unrealistic though isn't it. I mean, if I was the wife, I would freak on my husband for replying to classified ads, even though I was doing the same.
It seems like most Cape Cod songs wax poetic about sand dunes although in reality, a lot of dunes on the Cape are "out of bounds" because of the endangered Piping Plover.
"Cape Cod (Summer Song)" --by J Nelson K
“Cape Cod (Summer Song)” –by John Nelson Kullberg / Kenneth Benton
(VERSE I)
AMERICA BEHIND ME WHERE THE DESERT MEETS THE SEA
HIGH TIDE COMES IN RACIN' TO RECLAIM
A LAND THAT FROM WITHIN I CANNOT NAME
FOR AT MY FEET . . . THE WAVES A’RE BREAKIN'
WHILE IN MY MIND THESE DREAMS WON'T BE FORSAKEN
(CHORUS I)
OF OLD CAPE COD
WHERE I LONG TO LIVE THIS SUMMER SONG
IN A PLACE TO CALL MY OWN . . . ON OLD CAPE COD
WITH MEMORIES OF ALL THOSE SUMMERS’ GONE
WHEN TIME ARRESTED IN IT'S FLIGHT
AND BRIGHT BEACONS BURNIN' IN THE NIGHT
MADE LOVE AND LIFE SEEM ALL SO CLEAR TO ME . . .
ON OLD CAPE COD
(INSTRUMENTAL BREAK)
(VERSE II)
WITH A NEW WORLD BEFORE ME
WHERE ONES' SPIRIT CAN BREATHE FREE
MY EYES BEHOLD AND TRY TO GRASP
WHAT OTHER SENSES SEEM TO KNOW WON'T LAST
YET WHEN I WALK . . . I'LL TAKE ALONG WITH ME
SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT THE NAKED EYE WILL SEE . . .
(CHORUS II)
OF OLD CAPE COD
WHERE I LONG TO LIVE THIS SUMMER SONG
IN A PLACE TO CALL YOUR OWN . . . ON OLD CAPE COD
WHILE MAKIN' MEMORIES OF WHAT WILL BE WHEN SUMMERS’ GONE
